About Pet Portraits In Pastel

I have found that creating a drawing on the textured tooth of pastel paper adds a wonderful feeling of movement and realism to my drawings.

The softness of the chalk pastels allows me to capture the physical appearance and distinct personality of your furry friend. Each drawing is painstakingly created with the utmost care and dedication with these high-quality art materials.

Belinda Marshall

About Pet Portraits In Pastel By Belinda Marshall

My name is Belinda Marshall and I have enjoyed art my whole life.

I have always been interested in drawing, even as a young girl, when I would spend a lot of time working on my colouring books.

This interest carried forward into school and eventually art college, where I graduated at the top of my class in textile design.

I had a short career in a textile firm before travelling for a couple of years.

On returning home, I decided to try animals, which I am entirely self-taught, instead of my previous florals and patterns.

This is when my painting career started. I got a few sales of African wildlife animals, which encouraged me to persevere.

Since then, I have done many commissions that have found homes all over the world as well as sold locally in southern Africa.

I have had the pleasure of taking part in and co-managing a biannual ladies-only art exhibition in my hometown of Bulawayo for several years, called “Art On The Stoep”.

My portfolio also includes creating a unique painting to represent Zimbabwe in a children’s book that hired artists from countries all over the world.

My work is also represented in a permanent collection housed in New York.

Woodgreen Pets Charity

Woodgreen Pet Charity

As a pet portrait artist, I take pride in supporting a pet charity. This wonderfully worthwhile organisation cares for and finds new loving homes for stray and injured animals.
For every custom pet portrait commission I undertake, I contribute a portion of the fee to support Woodgreen Pet Charity.

Creating Pet Portraits in Pastel

Cat Portrait

The new direction of my career has evolved into pet portrait drawings. Pet subjects have included dogs, cats, and horses, and I have even done owls and a chicken! It does not matter what pet you want a drawing of; I will do it for you.

My preferred medium for commissioned pet portraits is soft pastel on textured paper. Over the years, I have discovered that I really enjoy the drawing technique over painting. This includes colour pencils and graphite pencils too.

I think that the heart and soul of a drawing of any animal or bird are the eyes. I always start my hand-drawn pet portraits in pastel with the subject’s eyes and get the expression right before moving outwards to complete the rest of the portrait.

With over 30 years of experience in my art career, and considering that 25 of those years have been painting and drawing wild animals, birds, and pets, your pet portrait commissions are definitely in safe hands.

I will do my best to capture the spirit and personality of your best friend accurately. I have learnt a lot about pet portraits in pastel drawings by creating animal art covering a wide variety of subjects over many years.
